Bengal Cat Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Are Bengals safe in a household with children?

A:  Yes.  Bengals are excellent family pets with loving, dependable temperaments.  In truth, there is more chance of a child injuring a Bengal kitten than the other way around, because of this, it’s essential to teach a child how to love and handle a pet.  As long as your Bengal kitten is purchased from a breeder who gives a lot of hands on love and attention, a Bengal will be the star attraction in your family.  Our children push our Bengals in strollers, play tag with them, and smother them with kisses.  This daily hands-on interaction is key to the D’vine D’zine distinction: outstanding temperament.

Q: What is the Bengal personality like?

A:  Bengal cats have been described as behaving as more dog than cat and are known to be outgoing, curious, playful, and affectionate.  They are sensitive souls known to have exceptional intelligence and trainability.  They enjoy playing in water and have an affinity for climbing to high locations, both of which are characteristics passed down from their ancestor the Asian Leopard Cat, known to hunt in trees, and swim in the water.  Bengals are athletic cats and love to play hard and run full speed through the house.  Bengals thrive when they’re played with daily and especially enjoy running and jumping games.

Q: How big do Bengals grow?

A:  Bengals are medium to large domestic cats with solid musculature.  Adult males weigh on average between 14-20 lbs., and adult females between 8-12 lbs.

Q: What do Bengals eat?

A:  Bengals eat the same as other breeds of domestic cats, though we highly recommend super premium quality dry or canned cat food.  Cheaper brands have more filler causing your cat to eat more of it in an attempt to get the nourishment that it needs.  This in turn can lead to a variety of health problems for your pet.   Check the ingredient list to make sure that meat is the primary ingredient because cats are obligate carnivores, and by nature they will not thrive on a high carbohydrate diet.

Q: Are Bengals hypoallergenic?

A: No, there is no hypoallergenic breed of cat.  Though since the Bengal cat's coat is close lying and short, like a thick pelt, there is minimal shedding.  This makes it easier for some people with allergies to live with Bengals.  However, though some people’s allergies won’t be triggered by being around a Bengal, others are.  My son, who is allergic, can cuddle and sleep with our Bengal with no problem.  Visiting a Bengal cattery will be a sure fire way of finding out if a Bengal kitten is right for you.

Q: Do Bengals actually like water?

A:  Yes.  Bengals are known by their love of water.  This is due, in part, to their close relation to the Asian Leopard Cat, known to be an accomplished fisher and swimmer.  Many Bengals are also known to skim their paw on the surface of the water in their bowl prior to drinking, just as the Asian Leopard Cat is known in nature to skim standing water to remove the algae.  Our Queen enjoys splashing in the bathtub with a few inches of water and can’t resist standing by to assist when I’m washing the dishes.
